The custom glass sculpture artist who created the glass artwork in your home put a great deal of time and effort into it. Regardless of how perfectly the glass art sculpture is at complementing your collection, it is still going to get dirty. As a glass art owner, you need to know how to safely clean your fine art possession.
All glass sculpture is not the same.
Not all glass is created equal. It is a good idea to know exactly what kind of glass was used to make the art you are trying to clean before attempting to do so, because you could damage the glass or any custom finish it may have. The majority of glass is usually either furnace or soft glass, Borosilicate, or a high thermal expansion glass. Furnace glass can have either hard surfaces (i.e., BK-7) or be very soft with some percentage of lead melted in the glass for workability and color brilliance.
Here are some methods to avoid:
- Never put glass with a wall thickness over 1/4" or 6mm in the dishwasher. Almost all hand-blown artwork is sensitive to heat. It also tends to be sensitive to dramatic changes in temperature called “thermal shock.” Thermal shock happens when you put something in a dishwasher. If you are not careful, your glass artwork could crack inside the dishwasher, by virtue of glass being controlled crystalline stress. Upsetting the balance of this balanced stress is what causes the majority of damage to glass art.
- Never use abrasive cleaners. Steel wool, or abrasive chemicals will do more harm than good. Most people are shocked to learn just how easy it is to scratch glass... Keep the abrasive stuff for pots and pans!
- Remove your jewelry first. Remember how we learned in school that the hardness of diamonds can cut glass? That concept still applies today, and is often a reason why someone will need antique glass repair... Removing one’s wedding ring and other jewelry before cleaning the glass can save heartache later.
- Never try to polish out a scratch regardless of the type of glass. Taking scratches out of glass, no matter how "slight" the scratches may appear, is virtually impossible and will only greatly worsen the problem. Using a glass restoration expert like Michael Bokrosh who has the proper equipment and years of training, your scratches will completely disappear and your treasured glass sculpture will be restored so that you will be able to appreciate your glass art work once again.
Keeping these tips in mind, you should have no trouble keeping the efforts of the custom glass sculpture artist who created your fine art, such as Michael Bokrosh III of Bokrosh Studio, looking great for generations to come!
